What Exactly Is Telepsychiatry? Here's How It Works

If you’re living in a rural area and you or a loved one needs mental health services, you may not find a qualified provider within driving distance. Perhaps you have a physical disability or live with excessive fears that make it difficult to leave home to receive therapy.

Untreated mental health issues result in poor outcomes. If you or someone in your household suffers from depressionanxietyPTSDbipolar disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and you’re not able to receive necessary treatment, you’re at increased risk for disability, substance abuse, homelessless, and/or entering the legal system.

Our board-certified psychiatric mental-health nurse practitioners with Nunn Psychiatric Care in Hodgenville, Kentucky, can provide the therapy you need via telepsychiatry.

Our advanced knowledge and skills equip our psychiatric nurse practitioners to provide comprehensive services, which are the same as those of a psychiatrist. However, we’re able to conduct therapy sessions via telemedicine.

We assess, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions in patients from 4 years old through adulthood. For example, If your child is having trouble with social skills or in regulating emotions and you think they may have ADHD, we provide testing, diagnosis, and treatment.

You can receive effective telemedicine treatment if you suffer from depression, anxiety, or another mental health condition that limits your quality of life.

We provide individual and group psychotherapy and counseling and prescribe medication when needed to help you or your loved one function better. Our staff makes mental health education resources available to help your whole family handle a mental health diagnosis.

Before the telepsychiatry appointment

We provide you with instructions about technical features your phone or computer should have. We send you a reminder email or text prior to the appointment and ask you to confirm it. You should prepare for the appointment the same way you would for an in-person visit.

You’ll go to a link we send you on your phone or computer. We may ask you to do a pre-appointment check-in a day before the video meeting. You’ll answer questions about how you’ve been feeling since the last appointment. If the appointment is for your child, have your list of questions ready.

At the telepsychiatry appointment

At the time of the appointment, you click on the link we send and open the video screen. You’ll see your therapist on the screen shortly. Your provider conducts the session with you just as it would occur in person. They have the ability to share slides and videos with you during the session.
